Yesterday was Hari Raya Puasa or Eid Mubarak – things are so different today and years back. Missing all the Malay food goodies … and especially all my Muslim friends out there. Wishing all Selamat Hari Raya & Eid Mubarak ! The humble Lego blocks …
Today is the inspiration to radically change the construction sector. There are various terminology for this; off-site manufacturing, industrialised building systems, construction prefabrication, etc. etc. It all comes to the same concept – construction technique in which components are manufactured in a controlled environment on-site or off-site, transported, positioned, and assembled into a structure with minimal additional site work – its just like buying the box of blocks off the shelves and fit it back home – LEGO. How do you do it? The nearest similarity available today is IKEA. Flatpack in a global scale is demonstrated to be possible, feasible, and most importantly – ability to make tonnes of money. Flatpack homes are now being studied by Ikea (Ikea flatpack house link). In an ideal world, these systems offers benefits to adopters in concerning cost and time certainty, attaining better construction quality and productivity, reducing risk related to occupational safety and health, alleviating issues skilled workers and dependency on manual foreign labor, and achieving the ultimate goal of reducing the overall cost of construction. But, how close are we in making this into a common practice an industry scale? You can read more of Malaysia’s attempts here http://ascelibrary.org/doi/full/10.1061/%28ASCE%29AE.1943-5568.0000072 |
